Property Information

12-6860 Kalapana Kapoho Beach Rd
Pāhoa HI 96778 United States

Our private cottages are placed atop rolling green hills with stunning views of the ocean. Each cottage is artistically designed to compliment the serenity of the surrounding tropical landscape and may vary slightly from the photos used. Cottages can accommodate 1-3 people with various bed arrangements.

Kalani is a non-profit retreat center and arts and permaculture community in the heart of the Puna District on Big Island, Hawai'i. Our expansive campus is a hub for permaculture gardening, education programs, community workshops, special events, spa services, and yoga, arts and dance classes. Nestled in lush jungles that hug the wild coastline along the scenic "Red Road", Kalani is in close proximity to many natural wonders. Black sand beaches abound, including the newly formed beach at Pohoiki that resulted from the 2018 lava flow!

Terms & Conditions

CHECK IN: 4:00 pm
(9pm latest check in available. If you are arriving after our closing time of 6 pm, please notify us ahead of time by email or phone to arrange for someone to meet you upon arrival at your estimated time.)

CHECK OUT: 11:00 am
(Due to same day departures and arrivals, we are usually unable to offer late check outs. For early morning check outs please check out with our team the evening before. Failure to return keys by 11:30 am will result in a late check out charge of $100. Failure to check out by 3pm or later will result in a charge of another night’s stay. )

Our accommodations are rustic and simple, “jungle-chic” as we like to say! Rooms are not equipped with air conditioning, as we benefit from consistent east-to-west Pacific trade winds. We offer retreat style housekeeping, meaning we do not typically service rooms during your stay. If you require extra towels, linens or drinking water you may request them at Hale Aloha.

Make time for self care during your stay in paradise! We have a small group of talented therapists who offer a variety of massage modalities. Please reserve your appointment at Hale Aloha or by contacting wellnesscenter@kalani.com with at least 24 - 48 hours notice.

We offer an airport shuttle service to and from the Hilo Airport for $50 each way or $100 round trip which must be requested at least 24 - 48 hours in advance. We do not offer services to or from Kona. Renting a car is highly recommended to explore the gems in our rural area. A gate code will be provided at check in, so for safety please do not share this code with anyone.

DAILY: 8:00 am - 6:00 pm
Enjoy drinks, coffee, ice cream, snacks and retail items at our shop! This also serves as our Front Desk Check In.

At this time, we do not offer meal service on site. Snacks, coffee, ice cream and local crafts are available for purchase at Hale Aloha during open hours. The closest food options are Uncle Roberts up the street and a variety of restaurants and grocery stores in Pahoa town about 25 minutes away. Please keep all food items in the refrigerator in your room or other airtight containers to avoid fire ants and other jungle critters.

Please note the pool is closed on Mondays for a regularly scheduled deep clean. The pool area is topless optional for both men and women, and clothing optional after 6pm. Children under 12 are not permitted at the pool or hot tub. No lifeguard on duty; pool use is at your own risk. Please shower before entering the pool/hot tub as we use limited chemicals. No glass at the pool please.

Complimentary WiFi is available in most guest rooms, at the Guest Lounge and at Hale Aloha. Our internet connection is sometimes inconsistent, given our jungle environment and mobile phone reception is also variable. Online communication tools like Facebook Messenger, What’s App and Slack are recommended.

Filtered water stations are set up in your room, common spaces across campus, and at Hale Aloha. We do not sell plastic water bottles and encourage guests to bring reusable water bottles. Tap water is from our well and tastes brackish. It is best for brushing your teeth and showering, though not for drinking.

No unregistered guests are allowed on property. Please register guests at Hale Aloha during open hours. All patrons not staying on property are to leave by 5pm. Inquire with guestservices@kalani.com about additional fees for overnight guests.

Daily community classes such as yoga, dance, and arts classes are available during your stay. Our weekly class schedule is provided upon check in and posted in multiple locations across campus.

Plan on seeing lots of small, harmless animals like geckos, spiders and mongoose on our grounds. You may also encounter feral pigs on site. Please do not approach or feed pigs.

DAILY: 10:00 pm - 8:00 am
Please be mindful of noise for a peaceful environment for all.

Kalani regularly hosts special events. Some events may require guests to purchase an event ticket to gain access to areas of Kalani campus including the pool area or main lawn. Please inquire with our team if there are any special events planned during your intended stay.

In an emergency dial 911. Note the location of the fire extinguisher in your room. First Aid kits are located at Hale Aloha. Smoking is only allowed at designated Smokers Tent (see map). Be safe after dark by staying on the walking paths, using flashlights, and wearing shoes. Do not eat fruit picked from trees or the ground without thoroughly washing. Angiostrongylus cantonensis (rat lungworm infection) is prevalent on Hawaii Island and eating unwashed produce can cause serious illness.
