The Tongue Hotel is a delightful former sporting lodge. Built in the late 1800s and owned by the Duke of Sutherland, the hotel boasts 19 unique bedrooms and many original features such as wood panelling, open fires, traditional antique furnishings, genuine exhibits and authentic paintings. The Tongue Hotel offers traditional Scottish hospitality, modern comfort and a warm laid back atmosphere.
Steeped in history, the hotel has a romantic, enchanting feel which delights and excites all who enter here. Hotel owners Lorraine and David and their enthusiastic team provide a warm atmosphere and attention to detail ensuring our guests leave with a lasting impression of this charming country house.
It is our intention to provide a quality driven service befitting the property and location. It is our aim to promote rest, relaxation and restoration to our customers by creating an environment conducive to this. Using a stylish palette of colours and furnishings, we aim to encourage the customer to kick back and unwind.
Rooms at the Tongue Hotel are individually designed with period features such as wood panelling, open fires and antique furniture. Each includes a decanter of sherry, sweets, as well as a TV, tea and coffee making facilities and Gilchrist and Soames toiletries.
Our 19 spacious rooms are designed to make your stay a pleasurable one. Room names such as 'Lady Claire' and 'Clan Mackay' reflect a bygone era adding to the nostalgic charm of this beautiful Victorian Lodge.
The bedrooms at The Tongue Hotel have been designed to a high quality achieving the delicate balance between regard for its history whilst providing modern day comfort. Each room has been individually decorated to be simple, welcoming, romantic and unpretentious. Many of the rooms are furnished with original pieces including marble wash stands, Victorian fire places and beautifully crafted furniture.
With twin, double and family rooms available parties of up to 40 can be accommodated. With its generous public facilities and intimate number of rooms the hotel lends itself perfectly for exclusive use, perhaps for an intimate wedding or a family gathering. All hotel rooms have modern facilities including digital TV, telephones, hospitality tray, and ironing facilities. The personal touch is enhanced by the provision of a complimentary decanter of sherry, sweets and Gilchrist and Soames toiletries. All rooms are ensuite providing bath, shower or bath and shower units, should you have a preference just simply enquire on booking.
The surrounding countryside can be enjoyed from all the rooms. Views include the stunning Ben Hope, the delightful ruin of Castle Varrich overlooking the Kyle and the charming vista down towards the village of Tongue set at the foot of Ben Loyal – the Queen of Scottish Mountains.
Master bedrooms are generally more spacious and boast wider seascape and landscape views. During the past 3 years many of the rooms have been refurbished, bathrooms have been upgraded and two master suites have been created including the Duke of Sutherland suite with cosy bedroom, grand sitting room and two bathrooms! Refurbished rooms have been sympathetically treated to delight both new arrivals and the hotels loyal family of returning guests.

Food
Within the hotel we provide food all day, much emphasis is be placed on providing a worthy dining experience at every opportunity with seasonally changing menus designed to utilise fresh locally sourced produce.
Food provenance is a key attribute of our menu’s we are careful to select the best of a Highland Harvest and where possible aim to utilise produce from within Sutherland and Caithness. Indeed the area provides an abundance of fresh seafood, meat and dairy products as well as locally grown crops, bread and preserves. Our food mission statement is Local, Sustainable and Proud
Our award winning breakfast menu offers a range of cooked breakfasts as well as a groaning buffet table with fruits, juices, continental meats, local cheese, homemade compotes, granola and muesli plus cereals and local preserves. Lunch is served within the hotel and the Brass Tap public bar, we offer a range of classic simple dishes, all of which are freshly prepared in house. It is our best intention to meet the needs of the individual and so always try to cater for all dietary needs. We encourage our guests and visitors to discuss their requirements with us and we endeavour to offer something to suit. Simple and timely decisions such as never using flour to thicken soups sauces or jus means that we are confident that we can offer a wide range of dishes to those with coeliac disease. For dinner; two menu styles are offered to suit guests and customers at two differing price points. Within the Brass Tap public bar diners can enjoy hearty bistro dishes in a cosy and cheerful setting. Often suiting families, walkers, climbers, cyclists and the local community the Brass Tap menu offers excellent value for money whilst remaining loyal to our Local, Sustainable and Proud ethos. Within the intimate hotel restaurant we offer guests a chance to relax and take pleasure in the food and drink delights that this North Coast has to offer. Elegant dishes showcase the carefully selected produce. Service standards are high with white linen, candles, polished silverware, gleaming glassware, knowledgeable personnel and professional glove wearing wait staff.

Facilities
To complement the dining experience, guests are invited to spend time in either the informal Brass Tap public bar or the Falcon resident’s bar. Here they have the opportunity to sample from a wide range of wines and local spirits, including single malt whisky, gin and bottled beers. Also available to the residents, is the lounge area with comfortable seating arranged around a large wood burning stove. The recently refurbished dining room, available for private hire can cater for up to 50. Its stunning views of the Kyle of Tongue and Castle Varrich it makes an excellent back drop for any wedding.
Current trading reflects income from functions, including weddings, funerals, meetings and parties.

2016 will see the introduction of a beautician at the hotel. Offering a wide range of therapies to both the local community and guests

Location and Activities
Nestled within the sleepy village of Tongue on the north coast of the stunning Scottish highlands. Overlooking the beautiful Kyle, the stunning Ben Loyal, and the gentle sweep of Ben Hope with Castle Varrich in the fore, the Tongue Hotel offers the visitor a glimpse of its glamorous past and reflects a bygone era.
The Tongue Hotel is located upon the north tip of Scotland, overlooking the Kyle of Tongue. This stunning area of Scotland has great scenic beauty and charm, its rivers, lochs, beaches and mountains are a major draw for people visiting the area. Tongue is a modest sized village with a big reputation - namely for their famous Kyle of Tongue oysters
It’s location upon the A836/A838 northern ring road from Thurso to Ullapool makes it an ideal location to reside and explore both Sutherland and Caithness.
Set atop of the North Coast 500 - Scotland's answer to Route 66 the hotel is ideally positioned along it’s rugged route. The 500-mile Scottish route links natural heritage and scenery, celebrates local food and drink and highlights accommodation, retail, arts, crafts and attractions of the region. The route has received world wide attention Travel Now magazine has placed the North Coast 500 route in fifth place in a list of 'six of the best' coast road trips on the planet.
Popular tourist trips from Tongue would include visiting the nearby Castle Varrich with its prominent position overlooking the Kyle of Tongue. The castle ruin and county of Sutherland draws visitors who are interested in the past and genealogy, the area is steeped in Mackay history and tells the story of the Highland Clearances. The Strathnaver museum at Bettyhill is an excellent tourist attraction chronicling the areas ancestry.
Tongue is nestled between fertile natural resources, the Flow Country (tentative listed UNESCO World heritage site) lies to the East and The North West Highlands Geopark begins just outside of Tongue.
The Queen Mothers favourite hideaway, the Castle of Mey, now frequented by HRH Prince Charles is just on the doorstep and provides an interesting tour of the castle and grounds.
The world famous John O’Groats is just a short drive away. as is Scrabster where ferries to the Orkney Isles can be sourced. The lesser known but stunning Dunnet Head - the REAL most northerly point of the British mainland is worthy of a trip and perhaps a picnic whilst looking out over Scapa Flow and the Orkney Isles.
There are many sandy beaches upon the north coast most notably Melness, Coldbackie, Balnakiel and Dunnet Bay - some of which are particularly popular with surfers.
As you would expect there is also vast array of places to fish locally, indeed all the country pursuits are well catered for with experienced ghillies available to assist with planning, instruction and guidance. There are many walks both for the experienced and the novice including Munroe's waiting to be bagged!

Rates stated are per room per night including full Scottish breakfast unless otherwise stated. See your chosen rate descriptions for inclusions and payment terms
Service is not included
For the avoidance of doubt, your price does not include any incidental charges which you may incur during your stay (for example rooms service, drinks, or the costs of external telephone calls from your room). Such charges will be payable by you on your departure. In the event that you fail to pay any such incidental charges, it is a condition of your contract with LDH Hotels Limited that you irrevocably authorise The Tongue Hotel to debit your credit or debit card for the amount of any shortfall

• Reservations and Pre-payment:
One night deposit is required on all bookings

Deposits may also be paid via Paypal upon request
A booking is therefore provisional until confirmed in writing following payment

• Children’s Policy:
The following bed and breakfast pricing applies for children in a fold away bed
When sharing a room with an adult:
 0-5 years of age free of charge
 6-13 years of age £20 per night
 14 years and above Normal adult rates apply
Children staying in their own room will be charged 100% of the full adult rate paid by the accompanying adults
Children are permitted in the Hotel bar, restaurant and the Brass Tap public bar.
We have a Children's Menu however Chef is more than happy to prepare something specific with notice
